Maori is an indigenous Polynesian language spoken by the Maori people of New Zealand. It holds official status in the country and has around 125,000 speakers today. The language plays a vital role in preserving Maori culture, history, and traditions. Maori belongs to the Eastern Polynesian subgroup within the larger Austronesian language family. Its alphabet consists of only 15 letters: five vowels (a,e,i,o,u) and ten consonants (h,k,m,n,p,r,t,w,g). Pronunciation often includes elongated vowel sounds. Today's standardization efforts aim at promoting consistency throughout different communities.
