Nepali, also known as Nepalese or Gorkhali, is the official language of Nepal. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan branch of languages and is spoken by around 17 million people worldwide. The writing system used for Nepali is Devanagari script, which consists of 36 consonants and 12 vowels. As a member of the Pahari subgroup within Indo-Aryan languages, it shares similarities with Hindi and other regional dialects in northern India.
